Consulting
Shortly after college in the early eighties I had a job in Southern California at the world’s very first retail store that sold only software for personal computers. My colleague, Rick, would always tell customers who complained about having to learn to use a new software package “You only have to learn it once, it’s easy to use from then on”.
Back then, the effort and risk involved with learning, say, a new word processor package was not significant. After all, the amount of features and functionality was limited. The lack of networking between computers meant that any failure was limited to you alone.
The advances in Business Intelligence technology and capability over the last decade have created opportunities for significantly greater gains in profit and performance for businesses and organizations that use Business Intelligence. Likewise, the risks involved in project failure, and even greater, the risk of not using Business Intelligence to your strategic advantage have increased significantly.
My experience has shown me that Rick was right. The initial learning and implementation experience involved can be an impediment for companies wanting the operational and strategic benefits delivered by Business Intelligence. So much effort is focused on understanding the technology and its relationship to other systems and databases that the focus turns away from the business reasons for using Business Intelligence in the first place.
These reasons include alignment of activities from the executive suite to the front line team members, daily reports that support operations and accountability, regulatory compliance, ad hoc inquiries and analysis, alerting to potential problems and delays, and most of all, spending more time solving business problems and less time looking for the information needed to make key business decisions.
When you need to learn Business Intelligence, CNE will be there for you with our educational offerings, seminars, webinars, white papers, and more.
